Fluxys starts construction of first phase of Belgian hydrogen network
Our partner Fluxys has officially announced the first phase of the construction of a hydrogen network in Belgium. This milestone is an important step in the transition to a low-carbon economy. The new hydrogen infrastructure will be crucial for making industry in our region more sustainable, with both Flanders and Zeeland fully committed to developing a robust hydrogen economy.
Hydrogen as the driving force behind the energy transition
Fluxys, which has been working on the development of hydrogen infrastructure since 2023 through its subsidiary Fluxys hydrogen, was officially designated as the operator of the Belgian hydrogen network in April 2024. In this role, the company is taking the lead in the creation of an open-access hydrogen pipeline network to which both producers and consumers can connect.
The first pipelines will be laid in the port areas of Antwerp and Ghent, with a strategic connection between Kallo and Zelzate. This region is an integral part of the Smart Delta Resources cluster, which focuses on cross-border cooperation and sustainability.
A shared goal: 30 TWh of hydrogen by 2030
The project is supported by the federal government through the European Resilience and Recovery Fund and will be expanded in stages. This infrastructure will lay the foundation for a sustainable hydrogen network that should be able to transport an annual capacity of 30 TWh by 2030.
This project fits seamlessly with Smart Delta Resources' ambitions to help industry in the region become more sustainable and achieve climate targets. Through joint efforts in infrastructure development, knowledge sharing, and cross-border planning, we can make the necessary acceleration towards a climate-neutral industry.
